Spinal Cord Injury and Neurological Disease

      Each year, approximately 25,000 Americans sustain some form of spinal cord injury or disease. Our goal atBallard is to help patients believe that a full and productive life is possible after such an injury or illness.

Expected Outcomes
Our multidisciplinary team helps patients:
learn about disease process, skin integrity, pulmonary hygiene, bowel and bladder function, sexuality and nutrition.
direct or perform self-care skills in bathing, dressing and feeding.
establish a plan for skin management and wound care.
develop a pre-vocational and educational plan.
network into local and national support groups.

Patient Profile
Our program is designed for patients with the following diagnoses:
spinal cord injury.
quadriplegia/paraplegia.
quadraparesis/paraparesis.
spinal tumor.
spinal infarction.
spinal stenosis.
multiple sclerosis.
central cord syndrome.
Cauda Equina syndrome.
Brown Sequard syndrome.
Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Approach to Care
Our approach to care includes:
a board-certified physiatrist.
physical therapy to maximize mobility.
occupational therapy to improve self-care and pre-vocational skills.
rehabilitation nursing to educate in bowel and bladder function, sexuality, pulmonary hygiene, and skin management.
nutritional counseling to help develop a healthy lifestyle.
psychosocial support to help patients and their families adjust to the changes in lifestyle.
community outings to promote social reintegration.
home evaluations to ensure a safe environment.

Care is available on an acute inpatient and outpatient basis, and includes the following specialized services:
mobility court.
transitional living apartment.
therapeutic indoor pool.
community reintegration utilizing training with a wheelchair adaptive van.
vocational rehabilitation.
referral services for appropriate resources and support systems.
