Orthopedic Rehabilitation
The multidisciplinary program at Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital provides treatment and education for orthopedic patients. We work with the referring physician to meet individual needs. Acute inpatient and comprehensive outpatient programs are available.
Expected Outcomes
Our program for orthopedic rehabilitation is designed to provide short-term, cost-effective care to restore mobility and return patients to productive lifestyles. The goals of our program are to:
increase the patients ability to perform daily physical activities. help the patient perform self-care tasks such as dressing, bathing and using assistive devices. educate patients and their families about wound care, post-surgical precautions, proper nutrition and the use of medications. provide safety training to reduce the risk of potential injury. facilitate the patients transition to a home or community setting.Patient Profile
We treat patients with a variety of diagnoses and needs. Our program is designed for patients with the following conditions:
post reconstructive joint surgery. hip fracture. multiple fracture/trauma. amputation. hand injury/surgery. back injury/surgery. laminectomy/fusion.Approach to Care
Our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to improving patient mobility and restoring independent lifestyles. Treatment includes:
preoperative training to prepare patients for surgery and the recovery process. physical therapy including bed mobility, gait/stairs/transfer training and lower extremity conditioning. occupational therapy including dressing, energy conservation, upper extremity conditioning and home safety consultation. training in the use of splints, orthotics and prosthetics, as needed. nursing education about wound care, medication management, nutrition counseling, surgery precautions and modifications to daily activities. ambulation and assistive devices.Continuum of Care
We know each patient has individual needs. Our rehabilitation team continuously evaluates every patient and provides the following services:
patient care monitored frequently by a rehabilitation physician. case management support to coordinate the patients discharge and equipment needs. patients scheduled for follow-up care with referring physician after discharge. referring physicians are encouraged to follow their patients during rehabilitation. However, they may elect to refer patients to a staff physician for primary care during this time.Outpatient Rehabilitation
Outpatient care is designed for patients who do not require the intensity of an inpatient program or for those who are completing their functional goals established during an acute program. Therapy is typically provided one to five times per week, based on individual needs.
