Pain Management Program
Pain is a complex problem that requires interdisciplinary treatment. The primary focus of the pain management program at Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital is to empower patients with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their lives, despite a residual level of pain.
Expected Outcomes
Both our inpatient and outpatient programs focus on pain managementand reduction, not eradication. Using a combination of education, behavior modification and physical reconditioning, we work toward the following goals:
minimize pain. normalize movement patterns. improve physical flexibility and conditioning. develop healthy coping skills. develop correct posture and body mechanics. determine actual work tolerances. establish an appropriate medication regimen. promote understanding and adjustment with the patients family.Team Members
Our interdisciplinary team includes:
a medical director of physical medicine and rehabilitation. a psychologist. a nurse case manager. an occupational therapist. a physical therapist. a dietitian.Patient Profile
Deciding whether to refer to a pain management program can be difficult. The following criteria are helpful when making such a decision:
traditional treatment interventions have been of little benefit. pain is disproportionate to type and extent of injury. pain limits ability to perform daily activities. emotional and/or psychosocial complications interfere with recovery.
Local and national resources are also available.
