Brain Injury
Each year, more than 500,000 people sustain brain injuries. Spasticity, paralysis and contractures are common problems that, if not properly treated, can become permanent physical barriers to independence. Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital sets the standard of care with our comprehensive team approach, referral to appropriate resources and discharge to the community.
Expected Outcomes
Our multidisciplinary team, led by a rehabilitation physician, establishes a comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation plan. Patients and their families also participate in the development of treatment plans. The goals of the program are:
provide education about care-giving skills. establish realistic expectations for family life. increase knowledge about head injuries, as well as the recovery and rehabilitation process. improve self-care skills in bathing, dressing and feeding. improve mobility through training in walking, assistive devices and transfer skills. establish independence in bowel and bladder function. develop a behavioral management plan. maximize verbal communication and resume normal swallowing function. attain highest level of cognitive function possible. establish a plan for nutritional management. provide referrals for appropriate aftercare, vocational and educational services. identify the safest, least restrictive environment for patients upon discharge.
Our ultimate goal is to maximize each patients recovery while fostering the adjustment of both patients and families to any limitations.
Patient Profile
We treat patients with a variety of diagnoses and needs. Our program is designed for patients with the following conditions:
traumatic brain injury resulting from motor vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian accidents, falls and other injuries. nontraumatic brain injury and neurologic impairments resulting from hemorrhage, meningitis, encephalitis, anoxia, hydrocephalus, brain tumor and AV malformation.Approach to Care
Our multidisciplinary team focuses on each patients quality of life. Treatment includes:
physical therapy to improve mobility. occupational therapy to improve self-care skills and enhance independent living. cognitive/speech rehabilitation to re-establish the ability to process and communicate information. rehabilitation nursing to educate in nutrition, bowel and bladder function, sexuality and skin management. psychological therapy to improve the patients ability to understand feelings, control emotions and modify inappropriate behaviors. education workshops to help families understand brain injuries and adapt to lifestyle changes. therapeutic training for community re-entry.Continuum of Care
We focus on the individual needs of patients and their families through all stages of treatment. Care is available on an acute and postacute inpatient and outpatient basis. We also provide the following special services:
transitional living apartment. vocational rehabilitation. mobility court. therapeutic indoor pool. referral service for appropriate resources and support systems. on-site education and teaching services. community reintegration.
